Denis Dujardin is a Belgian nomadic consultant on landscaping and urbanism.
He designs different settings in a range of diverse scenographic contexts.
He teaches about contemporary landscapes (Séminaire des Paysages Actuels) at the University of Louvain-la-Neuve (UCLouvain), Faculty of Architecture in Brussels. He is guest professor and lecturer in the departments Architecture and Urbanism in different schools and universities in Belgium and neighbouring countries.
His signature is the focus on the feasibility, the self-evidence and the invisibility of the project. His work often features the idea of theatrically dissimulating the act of the intervention. He writes essays on art, more specifically on painting.
He is the author of about 400 projects in Belgium and abroad.
Approach
All projects are approached pragmatically.
Landscape has to do with nature and nature always seeks a dynamic balance.
That balance is managed by human intervention. In ordinary terms, this is called "maintenance". Short- and medium-term maintenance is our basic principle for every project. Projects must remain sustainable for years. The release of biomass is important in this regard. This means transport and transporting too much biomass cannot really be called sustainable. Each project is examined in terms of the biomass that may be released. And we choose to limit that biomass as much as possible.
We also work very hard with the aim of guaranteeing as much biodiversity coupling as possible.
Image quality is relative and subjective. Some projects have a static image.
In others, a process is set in motion that can be called "naturalistic".
This is a negotiation with nature.
In this negotiation, man continues to determine the image but gives space to natural processes.

Landschap heeft met natuur te maken en de natuur zoekt altijd een dynamisch evenwicht.
Dat evenwicht wordt beheerd door het ingrijpen van de mens. In gewone termen heet zoiets “onderhoud”. Onderhoud op korte- en middellange- termijn is bij ons het basis-principe bij elk project. Projecten moeten jaren duurzaam blijven. Daarbij is vrijkomende biomassa belangrijk. Dit betekent transport en te veel biomassa transporten is niet echt duurzaam te noemen. Elk project wordt bekeken in functie van die mogelijks vrijkomende biomassa. En daar kiezen we voor het zo veel mogelijk beperken van die biomassa.
Er wordt tevens heel sterk gewerkt met het doel om zoveel mogelijk biodiversiteits-koppeling te garanderen.
Beeldkwaliteit is relatief en subjectief. Sommige projecten hebben een statisch beeld.
Bij andere wordt er een proces in gang gezet dat “naturalistisch” is te noemen.
Dit is een onderhandeling met de natuur.
Bij die onderhandeling blijft de mens het beeld bepalen maar geeft ruimte aan natuurlijke processen.

Cet équilibre est géré par l'intervention humaine. En termes ordinaires, cela s'appelle la "maintenance". L'entretien à court et moyen terme est notre principe de base pour chaque projet. Les projets doivent rester viables pendant des années. La libération de la biomasse est importante à cet égard. Cela signifie que le transport et le transport d'une trop grande quantité de biomasse ne peuvent pas vraiment être qualifiés de durables. Chaque projet est examiné en fonction de la biomasse qui peut être libérée. Et nous choisissons de limiter cette biomasse autant que possible.
Nous travaillons également dans le but de garantir un couplage de biodiversité aussi important que possible.
La qualité de l'image est relative et subjective. Certains projets ont une image statique.
Dans d'autres, un processus se met en place, que l'on peut qualifier de "naturaliste".
Il s'agit d'une négociation avec la nature.
Dans cette négociation, l'homme continue de déterminer l'image mais laisse la place aux processus naturels.
